Response Question: Sins and Fun (pages 1-61)
Sam's family seems to be very concerned with avoiding sin and treason, and sometimes Sam gets in trouble for being less than "perfect" in his family's eyes. What are some of the things that Sam does that his father might not approve of? Give one specific example. Do you think Sam is right in doing and thinking what he does, or should he be more loyal to his family's values? Why or why not?

I think that Sam should stay loyal to his beliefs in what he's doing in the war. His family doesn't approve of his loyalist behavior and his blunt hatred for the "lobster backs". His father thinks he should remain loyal to the King, that there's no worth fighting for something he doesn't believe is worth it. Sam does, though, and if that's what he thinks is right, and he believes he's doing it for the right reasons, then he should stick with it. Nobody should force you to have a different opinion, no matter how insane people think it is.
Sam's father doesn't want him to go off to war. Sam's father insisted that Sam take off his uniform because he doesn't want treason in his home. I think Sam is right to a certain extent about fighting for freedom and fighting back, but I don't approve of him stealing his dad's gun after his father said not to.
Sam's father might not approve him if he goes to war. His father might think that the war is to dangerous for him. I think that Sam is right in doing and thinking on what he does. I think that Sam is old enough to take responsibility for his own action. His family does not have to warn him about everything that he does in his life.
One of the things that Sam does that his father does not approve of is fighting together with the colonists/minutemen against the British. Sam's father is with the King and believes that the colonists should live under the King's rule. His father would rather have him study and stay under the King's rule.
I think that Sam is right for doing what he is doing because he wants to be an independent person. Sam wants his principals to come before
anything else and he is willing to fight for his independence and beliefs.
His family is staying loyal to the king even though some people are starting to rebel against the king.
One thing Sam is doing that his family does not approve of is joining the army to fight the British troops. I think he is doing the right thing because what is wrong in some people eyes is right in another. Even though his family does not approve of what he is doing if he want to be free then fight for that freedom there is nothing wrong in that belief.
Make a prediction- how do you think Sam's actions are going to influence his younger brother, Tim? Also, given the title of the book, what is going to happen to Sam?
I think that Sam does many different things that his father might not approve of. The main one that Sam's father does not approve of is the war. I believe that Sam is right for going to the war because he want's to fight for what he believe's in. Even though this means he is going against his family he is doing in what he wants to do. Also, I believe that if you think something is right that you are doing, then keep going on with it.
Some of the things that Sam does that his father dont agree on is deciding to join the war without talkinga about it with his family. Also not just leaving college to fight in war for a reason his father thinks is unexceptable. I think Sam is old enough to make his own decisions, since back then you were concidered a adult at the age of 16. Also I think he fought in what he believed and he believed that you shouldnt have to pay taxes to someone who is 3,000 miles away from you. I think that is rediculous and I think Sam has strong beliefs and I think that his family should learn how to deal with it and be able to talk to him about it and help him get thre things, nt by fighting with him because of his beliefs.
Sam does many of things that his father doesnt approve of. Sam doesn't think his father knows what he's talking about when it comes to the war.I thimk if Sam thinks he's right he should stand by his word , even if it is his father baecause wrong is wrong.Sam can also be loyal to his family and do and thinks what right.
In the first 61 pages sam did a good amount of things that his father seemed to definitly not apporve of. First of all, Sams father does not want him to go to war. He does not believe in it and doesnt want hatred in his home. I believe that there both right to a certain extent. Sam wants to fight to live free and is willing to,On the other hand his father disagrees. His father might not approve of him but i think sam is old enough to make his own decisions and should go for what he believes he should do.
Sam's father gets upset when Sam talks with food in his mouth he finds that to be very disrespectful. He also doesn't want him to join the war , Sam's family is staying loyal to the king and won't let Sam become a solider in the war and doesn't even allow Sam to talk bad about the king.
His family also didn't want him to boast because boasting is pride in their household is believed to be "sin".
I agree that Sam has every right to express his feelings towards the war. He also has every right to announce it to his family. However, I feel as though Sam could've made his point a little more maturely. Not to mention,at that moment he seemed a little disrespectful for arguing with his father in front of guest.
I think Ashley is right. Sam should stay loyal to his beliefs. I would rather fight and die for something that I believe in than for someone to put me in a position that I have to be in the war and dont want to be there. I hope his father stands up and believes in his son and his beliefs.
I think that sam does a lot of things that his father or family for that matter may not approve of one of which is fighting in the army. The reason that I say this is because of the fact that sam goes wants to to fight in the war and his father mdoes not think it is the right thing to do and he gets mad and they go though a whole big thing over it. I think that sam is right in doing what he believe in because if he didn't and just did what his family wanted him to do than he might not feel the same way about his family because they did not let him go out and do something that he really believed in. So I think that sam should do want he want to cause at the end of whatever happenese he would be the only one to blame.
